Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry by Mildred Delois Taylor
“I loved this book. Love really isn’t the right word. It was such a sad book, harrowing in many places but really brought home the reality of the life of a black person in the US. The struggle and problems that were deliberately placed in their way truly came to life in this book. I really felt for Cassie who had been protected for all the injustice prior to the events in the book and did not understand the issues her parents were up against. Her pure heart really shines through on every page and then her anger and frustration. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a starting point for learning about racism. While I am sure many Year 6’s would be able to handle the story I would suggest that it is more suitable for secondary school.”
