I loved this book. It was so dark and exciting. You just didn't know what was going to happen! I can't wait to read it to my year 6 class. I love the character of Dr Kalmenius and the way we meet him.

A fantastical tale with well written characters set in a German town many years ago. It is imaginative and at times, chilling. I liked the boxes which contained extra information, observations, opinions and facts.

Intriguing and probably worth another read! It was hard to follow everything the first time!

I found this read thoroughly intriguing and it stayed with me for days, if not weeks, afterwards! The dark twists and turns are gripping, making it a real page-turner. Also love the little asides that the author makes to the reader making it feel like a shared experience. Would definitely recommend!

Although a fairly short book, it is a gripping, clever story with dark twists but a happy almost moral ending. I really enjoyed it.

Another great story from Pullman. I feel it’s a story to be read out loud and enjoyed rather than to be studied as part of an English lesson as it’s all based on the art of storytelling.

My favourite part about this book is when fantasy merged with reality. It really took the reader on a journey through a clockwork. The references made to clockwork and how the story unwound was amazing. Even though short, it's packed with new and exciting vocabulary. My class thoroughly enjoyed reading and speculating about the book.

A short but compelling fantasy by Philip Pullman, using lots of classic German fairy-tale ideas in a new way. Recommended for upper KS2.

The writing style was very unique. Although I enjoyed the story, I did not love it because of the way in which it was written. I just could not get into it as I have with other books. Having said that, I could see younger readers really enjoying it and I know it is a popular book. I do not think I personally would recommend it, but I am glad that I read it because the story itself was very nice and different.

I really enjoyed this book. Each of the three parts cleverly tell their own story and then the ending ties it all together brilliantly. It features some extremely interesting and complex characters which will provide great scope for discussion with children.
