Unfortunately, we don't have this book on our school reading spine as they read it at our linked high school in Year 7. However, I had heard so much about this book, that I wanted to read it. The hype did not disappoint. I devoured this book in a day.

Loved this book and I know my class will really enjoy the read in the Autumn term. It appeals to upper primary students with a mix of outstanding characters, the dialogue and the continuing threat throughout the book. Loved it

A great book for Year 6, with some mature themes. I liked the character Stanley as he learns more about himself than he ever would had he not been incarcerated. Having the warden as a woman was also an interesting idea. Great description and plenty of opportunities for writing.

Finishing the summer holidays with a classic. If you haven’t shared this with Year 6 then it needs to be on a must read list

Absolutely love using this book in class. Such a great way to show a story with suspense and tension. Also, so different to books they have read before.

Highly recommend. Very clever plot, with flashbacks interweaved throughout the story.

I enjoyed the flashbacks and how the story tied together. A good mix of comedy and mystery with interesting characters

I read this as I felt I should but it didn’t draw me in and take my along like others I have loved.

Enjoyable book which many children will be able to relate to. Some great themes to explore further with my class when I come to read to them including identity, friendship, resilience and justice. Some great plot twists and an unexpected ending to the story.

Can't begin to say how weird and wonderful this book was. A seemingly unrelated hodge podge of narrative threads across different time lines which then as the book goes on begin to intertwine up until the book's brilliant conclusion. Absolutely loved it. One to revisit. I may well read the sequel!

This was a book I'd heard about a lot but never read. It's quirky and engaging with a simple style that brings out and interesting dry humour. I enjoyed all the characters, even the somewhat cliched villainess warden, but above all I likes the light touch on some big issues - like how characters get 'built' and promises. A clever book, well worth a read.

Heard a lot about this and a good read about equality, justice and a lovely story with a nice twist at the end. Enjoyed the ending and the oral story telling throughout the book.

The double story, the long term flashbacks that helped explain the present, made it a whole lot more interesting. Making the connections was fun. I loved the character of Kissin’ Kate Barlow! Although a smaller part in some senses her story was inspiring and gave opportunity to think about historical belief and policy. Good book.

My favourite character was Stanley, I liked his attitude to life and the way he dealt with all the situations he came up against.

This book had me gripped! Somehow the author has managed to turn something as tedious as children digging hole after hole, in a hot, dried-up lake, into an exciting story that you just want to keep reading! Stanley Yelnats and Zero develop into really interesting characters and they form a great friendship. 8 really enjoyed this book and would recommend to others.
