The first book in a series, 'Her Majesty's Royal Coven' is an urban fantasy story. The coven, known as HMRC, is a secret department of the British government which is formed of witches who protect the crown and country from magical forces and demonic bad guys. Set in the present day, it is narrated from multiple points of view: a group of witches who have known each other from childhood but who now, as adults, find themselves on different sides when a prophecy rears its head. The oracles at HMRC speak of the Sullied Child, whose coming heralds the rise of the demonic Leviathan. Determined to stop the impending apocalypse, Helena, the current High Priestess of HMRC, imprisons the suspected Sullied Child. But her actions are challenged by her former friend, Niamh. The story draws heavily on current debate about gender and identity, in particular regarding transexuals. The author, herself, is trans and she is clearly drawing on personal experience in framing her arguments. It is, at times, a bit heavy handed. A bit more subtlety and nuance would have given it more power, in my opinion, especially towards the end of the story.
