I really enjoyed this book, so much so that I read it in one big gulp. I liked the characters in this book and it was just a good story through and through. My one criticism would be that there should have been more time spent on rescuing Tomas in the strange Ice Palace, I felt that was too rushed. A good read that I will purchase for my class library.

I read this book at the wrong time of year. It is a great little wintery tale almost glittering with magic. It reminded me a little of the secret garden. KS2 would really enjoy this. It is quite short so quick to read. Could be good to read aloud, short chapters.

A delightful middle grade quick read. I would have loved to read this as a child and would recommend it to anyone who loves fairy folklore, Victorian tales and mysteries to be solved in large, near-empty houses.

The portrayal of time throughout this book was very cleverly intertwined in the story. The best character was The clockwork crow with his grouchiness, rudeness and boastfulness. I also liked Mrs Villiers' role in the story. I would recommend this story to any class teacher to read as a class novel as each chapter leaves you wanting to read on. The magical elements combined with vivid descriptions and strong characters made this a really enjoyable book.

A mysterious and captivating story which kept me wanting to read on at the end of each chapter. It was nice the book was quite short which allowed the story to have a good pace to the action. However, the ending was quite abrupt and I was left wanting more but…there are 2 more books in the series to enjoy!

Can't recommend this highly enough. Excellent. My class loved it and the other books in the series. Velvet fox and midnight swan.

A cleverly written book with many plot twists that keep you interested until the end! Seren is a fun, relatable character despite being an orphan and from a earlier time period. The clockwork crow is funny and clever, and his real identity is kept secret until the end. There are parts of the story that are still unclear, but I imagine this will be addressed in the sequels. Ideal for a child that likes adventure but doesn’t want a long, difficult read.

This is an intriguing book that kept you guessing throughout and really took you in to a different world. It kept me on my toes with its haunting progress and the Crow was a great character that made me laugh with the grumpiness he exuded. A great book that I would definitely recommend.

This book feels like a classic already! Set in Wales in Victorian times with a strong female protagonist it follows the story of Seren, an orphan who is sent to live in a big, remote house. The story takes a supernatural turn and has a mysterious, magical atmosphere. Loved it!
