- Fantasy Worlds - awesome adventures of magic and mystery
Enter the Wundrous world of Morrigan Crow and Nevermoor - the most fantastical children's series of the year. Morrigan Crow is cursed. Having been born on Eventide, the unluckiest day for any child to be born, she's blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks - and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on her eleventh birthday. But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor. It's then that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city's most prestigious organisation: the Wundrous Society. In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart - an extraordinary talent that Morrigan insists she does not have. To stay in the safety of Nevermoor for good, Morrigan will need to find a way to pass the tests - or she'll have to leave the city and confront her deadly fate once and for all. Perfect for fans of the Harry Potter series and His Dark Materials, this series takes readers into an extraordinary world, setting hope and imagination alive.
Reviews

I enjoyed the character of Morrigan. She was brave, rebellious but also a very likeable character. She showed incredible resolve when the people around her appeared to have abandoned her and all hope was lost.

Well written book with a range of relatable characters. Magic and world building was enjoyable to read too. Starts out on the darker side but doesn’t stay dark for long due to the entrance of character and the main character taking a portal to a different world.

Amazing book, Hunger Games meets Harry Potter.

I enjoyed the idea a little more than the pace of the book. The main character is great and her mentor is intriguing too. I didn´t so much like how it finished so abrubtly but, since reading the second one, which does have more of a tied up ending, I am quite invested!

A fantasy story all about a young girl called Morrigan Crow who doesn’t fit in because she is cursed and destined to die in her 11th birthday. Just before she is due to die, she is saved by Jupiter North and taken to a new realm called Nevermoor. There she is invited to join the Wunderous Society where she needs a talent to join but she is just an ordinary girl - or is she? Great story which I read very quickly as I was hooked from the beginning. If you love intrigue and magical talents then you will love this story. Definitely recommend you read this!

This was the best middle grade book I have read in a long time. It is a real page-turner, especially towards the end, with plenty of mysteries to keep you guessing. Lovable characters, friendship and belonging, found family, high jinks and magic - what's not to love? I definitely want to live in Hotel Deucalion!

Fantastic book with wonderful characters who draw you into a book that I could not put down! Captain Jupiter North is my favourite character - the affable guide to our adventurer, Morrigan Crow as she attempts to make a new life for herself. I would highly recommend this book!

I cannot rate this book highly enough! I have absolutely discovered my new, all-time-favourite middle grade novel (I thought it was better than Harry Potter which has always been my favourite childhood series) and I immediately bought and devoured the next two novels. Reading Nevermoor made me feel like a child again and I was completely swept away with the magic, adventure and sheer fun of it all! Morrigan is such a fantastic protagonist and the story begins as she is doomed to die on her 11th Birthday. Fortunately, she is rescued by the eccentric mentor-figure, Jupiter North, and swept away to the enchanting city of Nevermoor, where adventure, mystery and heaps of fun awaits her! The trials were so much fun and I loved meeting all of the weird and wonderful residents of the Hotel Deucalion. I would recommend this book to absolutely everyone and have chosen it as my first class novel for my Year 5/6 class in September!

The writing really does breathe and is alive in this book! The author uses such spectacular imagery and the creativity is contagious; it gets you thinking of all sorts of machines that could be invented like the Umberella train.

Absolutely adore this series. Book 1 is a page turner.

Although this would appeal to Harry Potter fans and lovers of magical books, the worlds created by Jessica Townsend feel very original and highly imaginative, which is quite a feat given the popularity of this genre with readers and authors. It's a wizard free zone. Nevermoor is a fascinating place to become immersed. The characters are hugely engaging, human and animal and the adventures move at a pace. Great to hear that it's the first in a series.

I loved this fantastic story about Morrigan Crow - a cursed child - and her escape from the Hunt of Smoke and Shadows into the magical realm of Nevermoor. Brilliant characters, lots of humour and some scary moments. My year 5/6 class are really enjoying this.

Loved this and it’s nice to have a female lead. If you like magic, a definite read.

I have really enjoyed reading Nevermoor, as it had a Harry Potter-esque feel about it. The book follows the story of Morrigan Crow, as soon as the book begins you are drawn in to a very dark moment making the reader very curious. The book continues to have lots of other dark twists, as well as characters that are unique like the Magnificat. Can Morrigan complete her 4 trials before the Hunt of Smoke and Shadow catches up with her? I would recommend this book for Year 5/6. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

A fantastic book full of suspense. It keeps you guessing all the way through. My favourite character is Jupiter because he is very quirky and you are not sure how he will behave or what he is planning. I have recently recommended this book to a number of children in my class and they are really enjoying it.
