The bestselling story about love, loss and hope that launched David Almond as one of the best children's writers of today. Winner of the Carnegie Medal and the Whitbread children's book of the Year Award.
Truly beautiful and kind of gothic novel. Would recommend for Year 6+
I thought this text was truly stunning. The way the author naturally captures the beautiful allegory of dancing with death through the poetic use of language is breathtaking. I loved the narrative arc of rising and falling between hope and helplessness as the innocent eye of the children is portrayed through a fallen angel. I would use this text with older readers as the descriptive passages are brilliant examples of how subtleties in description tell the reader more: show not tell. The reader needs to be older in order to really understand the subject matter. Definitely Y6 +
