Running on the Roof of the World by Jess Butterworth
“I loved this book, I only knew a little about it and had heard good things and so was pleased when my copy arrived. I very rarely read a book in on sitting, or in the space of a day, but I just could not put this book down. The style of writing leads you along the adventure at a pace. Told from 12 year old Tash’s point of view it gives a child’s perspective of what life is like in Tibet and the restraints put on people are laid out as a set of rules. After an incident in the local market and her parents getting seized Tash and her friend Sam trek across the Himalayas in search of an audience with the Dali Lama. The book is well written with short chapters, ideal for reading aloud in class and would be a good lead into discussions about oppression, refugees and asylum seekers. I would recommend this for children and teachers alike.”
